This is one of the reasons I’m happy to not be a manager. I don’t have to field as many difficult “customers” swearing that the book that clearly wasn’t purchased at our store was in fact purchased at our store. Anyone remember the book club size versions of the bestseller titles that would come into the store? They were smaller than normal hardcovers and had cheaper paper and dust jackets. I saw a few of those get the go ahead from new employees. I think that’s one of the reasons that company policy has changed from letting anyone process returns to –at its most scrutinizing—having only the manager on duty do returns. Also: Big box stores have big box sized books.
