I had an email a while back telling me a story of how demeaning cafe customers can be to booksellers. Is there some weird line between how people treat regular retail workers compared to retail workers who deal with food? The line of the customer saying “bet you wished you stayed in school” is pretty presumptuous. And annoying. And stupid. A ton of retail employees are working what you call a “dead-end job” to pay for higher education. Or are unfortunately stuck in the dead-end job because higher education didn’t bring any better prospects. Which is worse. Thanks, not retail person, for making our lives that little bit more terrible. We may or may not have spat in your grande iced tea.
