Staying Later
There have been many shifts nearing their end when a manager would walk up to me and ask if I could stay later. If my money situation was okay, I’d pass. Especially if the manager doing the asking was Lark. But more often the case, I needed more money. Bills suck.
Most of the time staying later just meant putting off plans for another three to four hours. Not a big deal. Customer service stuff, helping out at the registers, maybe completing a task or two…
Other times there where issues that needed to be dealt with. Smelly issues. Things that, as a seasoned bookseller you keep a trained ear open for so you can find ANYTHING to do elsewhere to avoid being given that unenviable assignment.
I’d say I’ve been pretty lucky to avoid most of those problems. Others have not been so lucky…
