If you work retail during the holidays, the final week leading up to Christmas is hectic, yes, but it is also filled with hour upon hour of Christmas Muzak that you’ve heard for the fifth, sixth, NINTH week in a row. No variation. The same loop every day. You’ve memorized each line, each stupid lyric to “Baby, it’s cold outside” and that awful Brian Setzer song where he screams, “Hey, Santa!” for five minutes whether you wanted to or not.

When you get to that point, something snaps. You reach for the spatula, “Santa Baby” starts up on the overhead speakers. A customer looks at you the wrong way. A twist of the wrist. …Red is a seasonal color this time of year… seeing a lot of red lately…. Anyway, this music needs to stop. Someone in the high-ups should think of switching the holiday music to instrumentals and ONLY instrumentals. Something one can either focus on or zone out. That would be a great present for Christmas/Hanukkah. Two more days… only two more days…
